Derby Name: The Eduskater (a.k.a. Eddie, peanut & Bangkok peanut)
Number(s): A+ (Hellbombers) & 100 (All-Stars)
Team(s): The Hellbombers, Burning River All-Stars, Team Motorboat
Position(s): Jammer/Tail for Hellbombers & outside blocker for All-stars
How did you come to enter the world of roller derby?
It’s all Amstel’s fault; I was sitting on her patio at the Thermadore questioning her about this whole “derby” thing when she finally told me to “buy the sh*t and show up,” and that’s exactly what I did.
How did the name peanut come about?
You will have to refer to Destroya for this answer; I believe she knows its origin.
What has been your favorite Travel Team bout thus far?
I was the most proud of the way we played against Arch Rival at Brewhaha. A close second would have to be the way we played the majority of the first half against the Chicago Outfit.
If I used really bad grammatical errors, would you correct them?
See below
What are key strengths that you feel help you on the track?
I’m a team player & respond well to feedback.
What do you feel are some of your weaknesses?
I need to be stronger, faster, and smarter.
How much do you hate R.E.’s workouts?
I don’t like them on Tuesdays, really dislike them on Wednesdays, and I absolutely HATE them on Thursdays.
What travel team would you like to play this season?
I would really like to play Arch Rival again this season.
What do you feel are key components to a successful team?
Trust, communication, and commitment.
Do your students know that you play Roller Derby?
Nope
Would you say your (you’re) more of a dog preson (person) or a cat person?
I would have to say I’m a dog person. Unless Kenzie gets into the trash or has gas, then I am definitely a cat person.
Who would you say has been the most pivotal influence in your derby accomplishments?
The people who have been the most pivotal in my derby accomplishments are:
• Amstel Standin’ for convincing me to play derby
• E.Gargiulo & Coco Sparx for drafting me to the Hellbombers
• Hot Tail for taking me on Hazmat as a Rookie
• Salty for sticking through a year of being an All-Stars alternate with me
• All-Stars selection committee for making me a charter member last season
• Last but not least, all of my pals/teammates that keep me coming to practice
What do you like to do when you are not playing derby?
If I’m not playing derby I’m working, and if I’m not working I’m playing derby. Is there time for anything else?
Who are you inspired by?
My students and the children’s book “The Little Engine That Could.”

Black and Blue 6 is just around the corner and I could not be more excited! After watching some of the best roller derby the nation has to offer this weekend (Big Ups to Gotham), I am ready for some in your face action. This year’s charity bout proceeds will be donated to Susan G. Komen foundation, I can not think of a better charity to donate to. True to Black and Blue’s roots, the league will be split into two teams. Team Black with top bidding guest Captain Tammie Konicki, vs Team Blue with top bidding Guest Captain Doug McCutcheon.
Normally it is pretty easy for me to figure out who will win these charity bouts but this year, not a freaking chance. The teams are ginormous, and it will boil down to how teams groove together, and how the vets are played. Though Team Blue suffered a terrible hit, shortly after the teams were annonced; “The Strangler” for Team Black decided to wipe out “Farrah Moans”. With Team Blue down one of the most impressive jammers this league has ever birthed, Team Black feels they now hold the edge.
Again true to form will be the always exciting Full Contact Musical Chairs, really the name speaks for itself. This is a right of passage for freshmeat, and a place where friends quickly become enemies! This year I will not be betting on anyone to win, every year I use my insider trading tips, drop butt loads of money on my horse (no offense ladies) and lose my ass of everytime! Last year I only lost 60 bucks, but that money could be better spent as charity than in WC pockets (that flipping Jerk)!
So expect to see Turn Two in their normal spots (Eddie almost freaked out last time I didn’t sit there), getting wreckless as usual. Best of luck to both teams, get rowdy, have lots of fun, and hit her like you hate her!

Ok so it is time to blow the dust off this site. I tried to place the site in the trust of others while I focused primarily on coaching the All-Stars only to watch the site die a terrible death. Now its time to breath new life into the site. If you want something done, you just got to do it yourself! Expect to see some upcoming posts, interviews (Eddie is next), bout previews and recaps, and any other of my musings. Shortly I will be posting my thoughts on the upcoming Black and Blue 6, so stay tuned and get ready for the ride.

Derby Name: Rainbow Fright
Number: 84 (Fun Fact: My first number was ROY G BIV. Then I wised up and realized that there was no way in hell that was going to fit on my arm.)
Team(s): Burning River All Stars and Co-Captain for the Cleveland Steamers (along with the lovely Mosh Spice)
Position(s): Outside blocker for All Stars and jammer/pivot for the Steamers.
How does it feel being the one of the newest All-Stars? It feels pretty amazing to be skating with some of the best skaters in our league (I say “some of” because there are plenty of great skaters in our league who aren’t on A.S. too.) I skated as an alternate for nearly a year and I worked really hard inside and outside of practice. I really can’t express enough how awesome it feels to have my hard work pay off and how grateful I am to be part of the team. It’s also a big eff you to everyone who said the skinny little vegan girl couldn’t be an athlete.
What brought you to the realm of Roller Derby? BRRG had been on my radar after seeing it in Pressure Magazine back in the day. I thought it looked cool but never considered joining until one of my bestest friends in the world, DameGerous, invited me to see her skate in the Championship Bout. It looked like fun and I joined without a second thought.
What would you say to individuals thinking they would like to be an All-Star? Be prepared for really hard work, both physically and mentally. The stakes are higher and you need to push yourself harder, learn quickly and work well with people you don’t ordinarily skate with.
What do you hope to bring to the team as an All-Star? I’m fast and tenacious. I’m also versatile and willing to work towards whatever position I’m needed to play.
Who has been the most influential in derby to your success? Primp Daddy. From the moment she drafted me, long before she was a captain for Rat City or breaking scoring records, Primp always believed in me as a skater and encouraged me to push myself and think about the game in different ways. She also is the one who introduced me to the hellish endeavor that is sprint intervals. I still do them. Thanks Primp. Sort of.
How has derby changed your life? Derby has introduced me to an athletic side that I never knew I had. My self-confidence is a thousand times better than it used to be. I got to perform on stage at Playhouse Square in Xanadu thanks to derby. Derby has introduced me to amazing people I might not have ever met. And it’s given me excuses to wear ridiculous things and attend some of the best parties of my life.
So I hear the workouts that the All-Stars endure are pretty easy, would you agree? Are you trying to trick me into saying they are so you have an excuse to make them harder or something?
What are some of your favorite things to do, when your not playing derby? A lot of my pre-derby hobbies have fallen by the wayside. But when I’m not skating, I’m currently trying to work on my house that Eric and I bought in September, reading or thrifting. I’d like to start sewing, blogging and gardening though.
How did you trick Eric into his derby position? No tricks necessary. He’s always been 100% supportive of me doing derby and wanted to volunteer from the start. He’s done stats, helped bench manage the Steamers and now writes bout recaps for the BRRG blog. I’ll never be able to talk him into skates though. He’s just not interested in reffing.
In what areas of derby are you trying to better yourself? In all of them. If you stop trying to improve your game you’re going to get left behind.
What do you feel are the keys for success for this year’s All-Stars? I think we’re on the right path. We need to keep up the hard work we’ve been doing and work together as a team.

I write this as I am still trying to decide how to best do recaps. I enjoy live blogging the bouts, but I miss so much of the action while doing it that it’s taking away from my enjoyment of the game. With that said, feel free to read my randomness that I call live blogging over at my site (pardon the typos, blogging on an iPhone while trying to watch the game isn’t so easy):
http://www.satola.info/2011/04/02/brrg-bout-2/
I was so pumped going into Saturday night. Steamers v Knockers was sure to be a great match and Bombers v Pinups should have been epic. 2010 Hazard Cup championship rematch, top 2 teams (in my opinion) in the league going at it for best record and bragging rights.
Game 1: Steamers v Knockers] Winner: Knockers 143-93
After last week’s blowout of the Knockers, they came to the track with something to prove and they certainly did that. This was an unexpected domination by the Knockers. The most impressive part of this game was Takeout. She showed up late because of personal obligations, skated a couple jams, and had to leave again. It would have been one thing to come in and skate for a few jams and be unproductive because of no warmup, but that’s not TO’s game. Instead, she comes in, fills in as Jammer, takes lead, and [strong]without[/strong] a PowerJam being into effect, scores 5 grandslams to rack another 25 points onto the Knockers already large lead. Mucho credit to the Knockers blocking armada at keeping the Steamers jammer trapped in the pack for that long.
Post halftime, the Steamers came back looking like they were going to mount a comeback. Scary lands a trip to the box, allowing Killy to get a 15 point powerjam. Next jam, CQ scores a quick 4 and calls it. Could it be a comeback? I certainly thought so, but was unfortunately mistaken. Knockers quickly adjusted to the changes the Steamers made and are again taking control.
A couple random thoughts I had during the match:
“Damn that Halo hits hard.”
“Steamers are getting lucky at the blind refs. I saw a few cuts of the track and definitely 1 trip that didn’t get called”
Game 2: Bombers v Pinups Winner: Bombers 106-67
I couldn’t be more excited at this point. This game has got to be awesome. The game opened with another trip that didn’t get called. Team Zebra doesn’t seem to notice some of the fouls that have been happening. Although the final score doesn’t really reflect it, it looked like everyone was giving it their all. Lots of hits. Lots of speed. Lots of fouls. Very entertaining. This game was pretty much all Bombers. A couple memorable moments and thoughts:
- 2 pinup blockers tried sandwiching Destroya between them to take her down, but ended up taking out one of their own and Destroya just pushed through to take lead jam.
- Sparkles – that’s one quick woman. It seems that not getting lead jam to her is as spinach to Popeye. She speeds around that track to catch up to the opposing jammer so fast. Incredible. Oh, and who can forget the frequent taunting? F’n hilarious!
- Eva nearly had lead jam and Slaughter showed up out of nowhere and takes her down. Nice skating. That said, she was in the box quite a bit this game. Gotta get a handle on those fouls.
- Great armwhip from Souleater to get Pixie moving faster, resulting in an 8-0 jam. Nice!
- Eduskater as Bombers jammer gets sent to the box, giving Pixie a powerjam. Unfortunately for the Pinups, the Bombers blocking team shut her down. Only 2 points.
- Eduskater lost her star helmet and some NSO actually ran onto the track to get it. No!!!!! It’s still in play, you have got to leave it there so the jammer can get it back. She can’t score without that on!
Overall, I expected a very close game. Was surprised to see the Bombers take control and have their way with it.
Oh, and one final thought: Hey Kent Smith – I don’t want a burrito from Ohio City Burritos. I know you have to promote your sponsors, but do you have to repeat it so much?

After a couple extraordinary season opening matches, it’s time for the second round everyone! Turn two is looking forward to the new match-ups this month. It should be interesting to see if the teams made any improvements after the first bout. I happened to enjoy watching the carnage and the injuries incurred by multiple players. I hope you had your ankle looked at Dita! The last game the Hellbombers barely made it past the Steamers, and the Knockers barely survived against the Pin ups.
The match-ups are setup this month so that the Pin ups will take on the Hellbombers, and the Knockers will take on the Steamers. It should be very exciting to see the Bombers take on the Pinups. It’s either going to be a blowout like last month or a very close game like the end of last year! The bombers are lacking in the jamming department so hopefully they will adjust. The pinups are too but did such an incredible job utilizing their players vs. the knockers. I’m expecting to see a fast paced game with plenty of action. I hope the bombers can keep a nice strong pack in place to give the powerful pin up jammers a run for their money. Coco should keep her taunting to a minimum because the pinups looked really impressive in the season opener. I hope Destroya has been practicing a better game plan other than forcing back block penalties on players (although it was a beautiful thing). Eva, Pixie, Ajennda weren’t messing around last month and will probably bring the same fire onto the track.
In the second bout, the knockers have a lot to prove. I really hope they have been practicing because it was hard to watch the blowout vs the pinups. Teamwork is a huge issue, at least when looking in on the team from turn 2. The talent is there but everyone needs to get in sync with one another. It won’t get any easier because the Steamers were tough on the bombers. I’ll leave it short for this preview because it will likely be a close game.

As I’m writing this bout recap outside on a patio in California, it’s
about 70 and sunny! I would like to thank everyone for allowing me an
enjoyable plane ride without bruises on my ass cheeks. I had much to
think about on the many planes that brought me out here. The
atmosphere was different for turn 2 due all the new faces and talent.
I could tell that the rookies had been practicing but still have some
key things to improve on. The injuries were insane and I was having
nightmares about dita von b’s nasty ankle injury.
In the first bout, the Hellbombers took on the Cleveland Steamers.
The Steamers quickly gained a small lead but lost it within a few
jams. Both teams seemed to struggle in keeping their packs together
and it was evident by the back and forth score. From the start, I
could tell the Steamers had been practicing and I could also tell that
the Bombers were a little weakened from losing two powerful jammers
(Storker and Bitter). I was happy to see the Eduskater rose to the
challenge and did a tremendous job jamming throughout the bout. By
the end of the first half, the Steamers led the Bombers with a score
of 35-36. The second half started the same as the first with scoring
going back and forth. Coco was being crazy on the track with her
usual taunting. Halochic and Morbid were wrecking skaters left and
right. Destroya forced Buddalicious into a back block penalty that
sent her to the bench. This reversed the power jam opportunity in
favor of the Bombers which likely aided in their victory. The final
score was 87-84, Hellbombers. I wasn’t impressed with either teams
performance but considering both teams lost key elements, I wasn’t
surprised.
The second bout was between the 2010 season champs (The Rolling Pin
Ups) and the Hardknockers. The Hardknockers also lost some key
elements but I was pleased to see Veruca Salty rising up as a key
player. The bout kicked off with the rolling pin up jammers
relentlessly ripping through the pack. It seemed like there was an
immediate score of 30-0 and I couldn’t believe how easily the pin ups
were scoring points! Pixie, Eva, Agenda, were on fire all night. The
Hardknockers kept fighting all night but couldn’t seem to catch up.
By the half, the score was 75-20. It was weird to see takeout in pink
but she did a hell of a job considering it was her first time jamming
with a new team. I think everyone needs to practice better teamwork
especially with the new players. Once this gets handled, there are
some new players on the Hardknockers that will do some damage. There
were some silly mistakes witnessed by turn 2 like when Monster decided
to keep skating around without calling off a jam. Turn 2 was really
sad to hear about Finnish-her’s injury. We wish you a speedy recovery.
A few other things:
The added time per half should be an interesting factor this year.
Teams will have to play smarter but will also be able to take
advantage of more opportunities. Also, turn 2 was looking slick that
night (pardon the pun) after witnessing many players falling down.
Marion Razorwound must have fallen 5 times! Lastly, the refs need to
get their heads out of their asses and start paying attention the the
jammers! The first bout was atrocious. Overall we were excited to see
some derby.

It is finally here the first inter-league bout of 2011, this year we def. have a lot going on. So many new face, so many changes, so many veterans have said their good-byes. I am both sad and excited; sad that so many of my derby friends have left, and excited to see who is going to step up and take some of the slack that they have left behind. I say this every year, but this year, any has a shot at the Hazard Cup. The Pinups have lost many of their veterans, in a team that was almost all veterans playing a skeleton crew last year. The Bombers no longer have Stroker and Bitter as jammers (two of the most powerful jammers in the league). Knockers have lost some vital players on their roster, and the Steamers have lost a couple key elements as well. However some of last years rookies have put in strong amounts of work, and have made some major strides in the league. The Eduskater and Veruca Salty are two of the Burning River Roller Girls newest All Stars, which is quite an accomplishment. Also Hidden Ajennda has made quite the home for herself on the All Star team.
The HazMat Crew also has a great deal of promising talent with many strong rookies from last year and even a few that have not played an inter-league bout! Ladies like Luz Cannon, Marion Razorwound and Hot Mess(<- that girl’s crazy) played their first bout last Saturday in Indiana against Bleeding Heartland’s B-Team.
I unfortunately do not have much insight as to the dynamics of each team, so I will not be posting any sort of “who needs to do what” type post. Actually I wasn’t even supposed to be writing this post (Everyone please be sure to call WC a slacker when you see him on Saturday, and… punch him in the ass cheek when he is not looking) but all is good. The first bout will be the Beloved Steamers vs. the Detested Hellbombers (not by Turn Two), both teams will be looking to put on a show, I expect this bout to be explosive right from the beginning.
The second bout will host the Hard Knockers vs. Last year’s Hazard Cup Champions the Rolling Pinups. Much can be said about this bout, the loss of major Pinup players, the Knockers acquisition of Take-Out. The story of how one of these teams tried to bribe Turn Two to wear there teams colors! Turn Two does not take bribes (we think) we will be wearing no teams colors (except by mere coincidence) that is an outrageous (we now accept all bribes to have Turn Two wearing your teams colors) attempt to sway home team advantage to your side!
Also, due to are freakishly busy schedules this year we have made no arrangements to ensure Turn Two will have their much needed location secured. If our position is not secured, you will be able to find us at the Thermadore Lounge with Mario, drinking more jager(which I don’t even really care for) than one person should attempt!
I cannot express how excited we are for these bouts, I believe the level of game-play that inter-league brings this year, will have a great affect on how both the All-Stars and HazMat will play the rest of their seasons.
I wish everyone the best of luck, I wish you all could win, but you can’t.
Be safe, be smart, kick some ass out there ladies!
