Alright Burning River at it again, this time up in PA battling it out against Steel City Steel Hurtin’. Steel City has been on a warpath and I am hoping that they are glossing over us.
After our rough time at Brewhaha, we may look like just another team to step on, however we know how step it up when big challengers, bring big heat! Steel City who had they’re biggest match against Detroit and loss by only 45 points.
It should also be noted that this is the bout that sports blogger Jody Diperna will be attending. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of reading one of the most ignorant hit pieces trying to discredit roller derby, Her article can be found here.
It has taken her 6 months to watch a bout, so lets make it a bout that she never forgets!
All I am going to say for this bout is put everything you got out on that track, give all you got each time your on the track. I wish you all the best in this bout. I will be watching this bout on DNN, and most likely screaming my freaking head off! This is a tough team, but you guys are some of the toughest female athletes, I have ever had the pleasure of calling my friends.
I love you all, stay safe, kick some ass out there!

It’s my understanding that this bout did not end up on DNN. And I have no idea if Jody Diperna ended up showing up or not. Anyway…
FINAL SCORE: Steel City 225, Burning River 62
Don’t be fooled by the score though. Despite this being a very lopsided win for Steel City, the game was still a battle. If you like a fast pace, big hits, and use of a variety of strategies, it was still a good game to watch. I attribute much of the inequality in scoring to the experience of their jammers versus ours. Pittsburgh has some AMAZING jammers who come from competitive speed skating and jam skating backgrounds. These girls literally tap dance their way through a pack. Walls that our packs built that would have stopped almost any other jammer just weren’t enough to stop the agility and speed that these girls had. Burning River on the other, did not have our typical jamming super-stars Erin Gargiulo/Ida Bitter, Eva Lucien, or Stroker Ace (who has retired from our All-Stars team). Instead we had myself, Punk’d Pixie, The Killustrator, and Take-Out jamming, all of whom are excellent jammers, but who also have comparatively less experience jamming at interleague level.
I want to give props to my team for not ever getting defeated out there. I’ve seen teams just give up when they see that ocean-sized score difference and I want to give my team a high five for fighting tooth & nail for every single point up until the final whistle. A number of people commented that despite it being a blow-out, it was NOT a boring game and that it was a battle the entire 60 minutes of play, which is going to be exciting regardless of the points on the scoreboard.
Steel City has a recap of the game posted on their website. It also includes a re-cap of the B-team game between the Blitzburg Bombers & NEO”s Audio Assault.

I have to say that, even though we lost, the reffing in this game was a LOT better than some of our recent games, and loads better than when we played Steel City the last time. I didn’t notice much, if any, one-sidedness in any of the refs, as both teams were penalized pretty equally. Some of the calls may have been questionable (*ahem* Oliver Pist calling that one particular major on h is lovely wife, and apologizing after for the poopie call) , but it happens. It makes a loss more bearable to have decent reffing. Thanks to all the BRRG and NEO refs and volunteers who came out and helped!
