EDITOR’S NOTE: Karen Donovan is an Indiana native who now resides in Cleveland with her husband, Mike. A substitute teacher, she is a new skater in a roller-derby league called the Cleveland Burning River Roller Girls. She recently spoke with staff writer Sam Kusic about the league and her interest in the sport.

Question: How did you ever decide that roller derby was the thing for you?

And that’s when I came across the Web site for the Cleveland Burning River Roller Girls. I thought they looked really cool, and I couldn’t wait to seem them. When we moved, we went to see them play. And they had these fliers that they were looking for recruits.
