missing-sign-guys
The Sign Guys are well known for clever, witty, on-the-spot, in-your-face, signs! These guys had signs to taunt everyone, Referees, skaters, Reverend Jim, even themselves! The sign guys could always be found dead smack in the middle between turn two and turn three, with a pile of blank signs, beer, and markers. Now for the past two bouts I looked to my left, …nothing. Maybe we can put out an amber alert, for something is truly wrongwith the scenario. Anyone who can remember the last time you have seen The Sign Guys, please alert your local authorities of that location. Maybe Pain Austen has stole The Sign Guys, for her own amusement in D.C. (we are onto you Pain)? Maybe Schwo had a hit-man take them out, because he could not take the Schwo-Mo signs? All I know is derby is not the same without those Sign Guys!

Bombers and Pinups
I knew these matches were going to be good, but I had no clue that they would be as amazing as there ultimately were. What we had Saturday was to old school grudge matches. Everyone should know the history of these four teams; Hellbombers and Hard Knockers have been number one and two since the creation of the league, Steamers and the RPUs have been fighting to forge their place of status. This year some things have changed, skaters have moved away, switched teams, become injured. Some teams have made dramatic changes, some teams like things just the way they have it.

In the first grudge match The Rolling Pin Ups are forced to skate with only 9 skaters. This skeleton crew has to face the team who just last month, shocked everyone with a win over the Knockers. The Cleveland Steamers are looking extremely fierce this year. Pain and sadness is felt throughout the stands, as the realize this David and Goliath is going to be brutal. I said in previous post that these teams are evenly matched; however skating nine, I was sure fatigue would get the better of the Pinups. But this was not the case; with Dagney and Soul Eater  back, this would be the much needed defense that was missing from their previous bout. Really I am at a loss for words trying to recap this bout, it was so explosive, so intense, gripping, riveting, and utter-shock the entire time. This was a game where defense was vital, and small mistakes were costly. In the end  the Rolling Pin-Ups played an impressive bout, a well played, raw, gritty, and intelligent game. Final score 61- 64 Pin Ups, my hats off to you!

In grudge match number two, Hellbombers and Hard Knockers got off to a  slow start, real slow. Both teams were having difficulty putting points on the board. The Hellbombers who always play the great strategy started working their nickle-and-dime approach; score a couple points while keeping their adversaries just shy of a point. However, the Knockers had stunts of their own, with Cheddar jamming and Scarrie at Pivot, things were looking up for the Knockers. By halftime it was an incredibly low scoring game with the Hard Knockers leading 22-15. The second half took a dramatic turn, when Knockers jammer got sent to the box and lead jammer CoCo Sparx pulls away with a fifteen point, triple grand slam, Jam of the Night Jam. Destroya with her always fun: “I’m lead Jammer, race the pack and watch the other jammer tire out trying to chase a point, just before she does call off the jam” plays are tremendous in chewing up the clock and wearing out the opposing jammer. The second half was too much for the Knockers to take and The Hellbombers did what they do best, WIN.

What a great night it was for derby fans of BRRG everyone got thier money’s worth and more! Everyone who missed these bouts should try and kick themselves in the ass as hard as they most possibly can!

As the second bout in the third season approaches, the four teams collide once again to find out who will prevail. In this match up we have the Cleveland Steamers taking on the Rolling Pin-Ups, and the Hard Knockers battling the Hellbombers.
Let us first look at the Pin-Ups versus the Steamers. This is going to be a grueling battle; I personally feel these two teams are evenly matched, it comes down to who can play better as a team. With Soul Eater back on skates, anyone that underestimates this team is in for a rude awakening. Hungry for their first win of the season, expect the Pin-Ups to fight tooth and nail to the bitter end. The Steamers still high from their victory over the Hard Knockers, plan to show the true dynamics of their steamy concoction. There is nothing that can stop this team, if they put their heads together. I expect this battle between Pin-Ups and Steamers to be epic!

The bitter feud between the Hellbombers and the Hard Knockers runs deep. The Hard Knockers are a powerful team, but seem to have difficulty when playing the ever impressive Hellbombers. But the Knockers are furious over their loss to the Steamers; these girls have a taste for blood. I caught Pretty Scarrie at G.N.C. buying protein powder the other day; when I went up to say hi, she kicked me in the nuts, pushed me over and said “Out of my way punk”! As for the Hellbombers, what needs to be said; this is the team to beat, it is hard to see anyone knocking them off the high horse. These girls train hard, and hit harder!

I will be flying solo, as WC will be in Chicago at a seminar. I will not be able to yell at this game, on Monday I had to undergo surgery that removed my belly button! I have to take it easy, but I will definately be there! Good luck to all teams, I will see you at turn 2!

Derby Name: e. gargiulo

Number: for home team, i am gonna stick with tooth, but for travel team #71

Team(s): hellbombers, burning river all-stars

Position(s): jammer, pivot, blocker

How did you learn of roller derby? i knew some ladies that were around for the conception of burning river roller girls. i made sure i went to the first bout, then consequently fell in love.

Why do you play roller derby? i love it. also, i can’t see my life without it.

You have recently dropped your derby name, why have you done this? i never really embraced the idea of creating an alter ego. i was into finding my derby name at first, but i never truly felt like it was me. i have been an athlete in some form for most of my life, and i was always erin, but maybe a more intense form of myself.

What has been your greatest achievement in derby so far? winning rookie of the year, for sure. it felt quite amazing.

If you could be an animal, which would you choose and why? i always wanted to be a cheetah. i never thought about why, but if i had to guess it would be because they are so speedy!

Tell us about your skates? i love them, although as of late they have decided to start giving my feet some problems… they are riedell 395′s with reactor plates. i also tend to use the zodiac wheels, although it could change with the new facility’s floors…

What is your occupation outside of roller derby? i am a hair stylist!

Is your family supportive of you in the league? absolutely. i always remind my husband to let me know when it gets to be too much, you know, to keep me in check. although, his love of hockey tends to help him forget that i may not be home… haha the center ice package… when one time zone’s game ends, another begins!

What musician have you recently been enjoying? eek! well, i have been listening to lykke li, some santogold, and gorillaz

Who inspires you? anyone philanthropic.

How long do you plan to play roller derby?  that is such a difficult question. i say see how you feel once the season is over… if you miss it, keep on, keep on…

Where do you see roller derby in five years? i hope it is seen for what it is. a true sport that deserves attention. we are truly hard working women that go through a lot of training to play the game that is roller derby.

What are your 2009 roller derby goals? i want to be seen as a force to be reckoned with… ;)

The first thought that comes to my mind when I think of Cincinnati is “disappointment”! I was disappointed when I went online to purchase tickets through Ticketmaster and it cost me 42 for two tickets! I was disappointed when I woke up that morning and found out that my road dawg was not coming with me. I was disappointed that I had two shitty meals on the way there!
However, one thing that did not disappoint me was the way my girls played! In was was supposed to be a total blowout (quoted by many) The Burning River All-Stars suffered only a narrow defeat, coming just 14 points shy.
The game started off a little rough with Cincinnati accruing 33 points before we were able to achieve one. In my opinion I think the strategy we opened with was slightly flawed. I understand the concept of trying to putting all your blockers in the back to force the 20 foot rule; however in an away game where referees can choose how far 20 feet is, that can make things extremely difficult. Like any great team we switched strategy and starting placing points on the board. We began a cut throat “nickle and dime” approach, to start hacking into their lead. We managed to get some key blocks, force some great penalties (quite a few times sending their Jammer to the box) and by halftime we were trailing 40 to 60. This 20 point margin was actually 43 to 57 (due to the fact that they gave Cincy our points), which made it an only 17 point lead. Soul Eater, do you ever remember seeing that score change?
So the second half started with a score discrepenancy that I am not sure went in our favor. But we got back to business. I just want to take a moment to say congratulations to all the first time Travel Team Players; Slammy, Bitter :) , Killustrator, and Primp Diesel, you guys played your hearts out there. And everyone that had to miss Killustrator’s fancy strut while her name was called in the opening introductions, sure did miss one of the funniest moments of the day!
My throat still hurts from yelling so much, and I think for awhile I was flipping off Referees. In one of the most bogus calls of the night Lead Jammer Eva Lucien gets pushed out of bounds, immediately calls off the jam (wile Out of Bounds), and then gets called for cutting the track. Not only was it B.S. but it was all of Cincinnati’s player that made the referees call the foul (illegal). Despite all the nonsense, with roughly ten minutes left and Stroker Ace as bruised and battered as she was accrued a couple grand slams all in one Jam (I never know how she does this, it is nothing short of spectacular), and we took the lead. We held the lead for roughly 5 minutes, but Cincinnati with the crowd behind them managed to turn things around. Our team got frazzled, the pack was in disarray, and when the smoke settled the score was 107 – 93 in favor of Cincinnati.
So let me say again how proud I am of the team effort put forth by everyone, you girls played so well as a team!

May all of you have a wonderful day with family! Travel Team, you girls played so well yesterday, it was an amazing bout to witness!!

The Burning River All-Stars are just days away from one of their toughest battles yet. The Cincinnati RollerGirls are some of the toughest skaters in their WFTDA Division. In a few of their more recent bouts against Grand Raggidy (whom we struggled as a team against) they pulled out a strong victory; when they played Fort Wayne, they put on an impressive workshop. This bout will test every attribute of every skater on the Burning River All-Stars; this will show if they can be as great as a team as they are as individual skaters.

It will certainly be interesting to see the difference in dynamics for our (and their) 2009 Travel Team. Though we have not made many extravagant changes; often subtle changes can make a world of difference. Having a few extra Jammers (Kilustrator and Ida Bitter) will help us to utilize some of our stronger Jammer/Blocker skaters into key defensive positions. I have hopes that Soul Eater will be back for this match, but I only want to see her playing if she is back to 100%, we cannot afford to have her be out for the April 28th bout (Go Pin-Ups, l00k I did it!). As promised (to Professor Booty and Ivanna Destroya) Turn 2 will be staying the night in Cinci (time to get rowdy), we will be making hotel accommodations shortly. Best of luck to all skaters, we will see you there!
