Derby Name: Dagney Taghurt
Number: RPU’s -$ TT=69
Team(s): Rolling Pin Ups & All-Star Travel Team
Position(s): blocker & optimist
What else, besides play, do you do for your league?
07 I took care of ticket sales and partnered with Ruby Rebel to plan and produced B&B2. 2008 I was elected to Director of Bout Production which included making sure all home intra-league, Ft. Wayne & B&B3 bouts came off without a hitch. I’ve also done small projects like putting together quilt squares for Dreadnaught’s project.
I’ve also recently partnered with underground comic book author Harvey Pekar to submit my derby story to Oni Press. Oni is putting together an anthology of roller derby tales. Hopefully, they will pick my entry!
How did you learn of the league?
The cover of Pressure Magazine and our former coach is a ‘back in the day’ friend of mine
How did you come about your name?
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand - read a book and listen to Glenn Beck
Why do you play Roller Derby?
Its physically and mentally challenging on a level I’ve never encountered before.
What derby skates do you use?
I’m slowly building my dream set of skates. I love my set of discontinued Reidel boots (THANKS RICH!) with a Reactor plate, Swiss bearings & Zodiac wheels. I’d like my next set of boots to be a custom molded with some custom multi color leather….a girls gotta dream.
If you had to skate for another team, who would you choose?
Detroit….Windy City…I really like living on a Great Lake. Hawaii has a league. I like Nevada’s political climate though. Arizona is looking nice.
What is the worst injury that you have received to date?
I’m currently jacked up with a knee injury. Post MRI diagnosis hasn’t happened, so I don’t know the extent of damage. I’ll keep ya posted!
What do you think of those crazy turn two boys?
I like a little more meat on the bones. They could both use some savory pot roast.
How do you balance roller derby and regular life?
Balance is difficult, but I try to be fully present at whatever I’m doing. I’m also really blessed to have an amazingly supportive partner “C’mon!” He knows I’m not going anywhere so he doesn’t freak out too much, but he does miss our time apart. So do our kids.
When you’re not skating you are…?
Being amazing and icing down my knee.
Where do you see Roller derby in the next five years?
I see growth in WFTDA leagues, but a larger growth in recreational leagues. More importantly, I’d like for derby to be acknowledged as a legitimate sport by games being televised, scores published in mainstream media outlets in “Sports” NOT METRO sections. Derby is a sport, not a scene.
Players having equipment covered in sponsorships arrangements. League owned facility to practice with greater scheduling flexibility & gym. I think it’s also really important to partner with a health care provider so players do not have to wait 3 weeks (or more!) from injury to diagnosis and creation of treatment plan. Injury care is priority.
