Finally, we are getting close to Season 3; it has felt like forever since the last bout I have seen. This year is sure to bring many new people, rivals, and especially bruises. Let’s see if the fresh meat can handle the crowd, the sign guys, Reverand Jim, and the nasty heckling from Turn Two. Of course my season ticket has already been purchased and somehow I was not first, I was third. Oh well such as life. I have a swarm of folk to be starting the Turn Two Army this year; friends, co-workers, family members, students, homeless people, circus freaks, the list goes on. It is sure to be a gaggle of fun. I do not get to use the word gaggle enough, I really like that word. Wow A.D.D. kicking in, okay back to the agenda:

This is the first event at the new venue The Euclid Sports Plant the floor at the new venue is sport court, so hopefullywe will the same fast paced mayhem we witnessed in Season 2. March 28th can not come fast enough. I just hope that the hotdogs are as good as they were at North Olmstead, those were freaking fantastic! And the price of Guiness was very reasonable. Either way, it is closer to my house (14.3 miles) and that makes me happy! So in the first bout we have The Hard Knockers vs. The Cleveland Steamers and bout two will feature The Hellbombers vs. The Rolling Pinups. I am not making any predictions; but if you are a gambler, stop by Turn 2 and I will have no problem taking your money!

Last season was a wonderful, and this season is gearing up to be an explosive season jam packed with action. I thought it would be nice to say a farewell to the skaters who will no longer be with us. It is sad to see people you have come to know and love, have to depart. Unfortunately this is life, fortunately none of them have died! I may miss a few people as new injuries have arrived, this may keep a few out the game. None the less this is my list as best I know!
From the Cleveland Steamers:
Ruby Rebel, Mata Hari, and last but not least Pain Austen
From the HellBombers:
Rolla Doobie, Lady Apollo, and Sin-A-Bomb
From the Rolling Pin-Ups:
Starla Stiletto, Angel N. Shadows, Vonnie Rotten, Queen Cobra, Hannah Bull, and Vanity Scare
From the Hard Knockers:
Cherry Venom, Full Throttle, Foxy Balboa, Grace Divine, and The Validator
We wish you girls the best in all you do! Feel free to comment about your experiences with these skaters. You will be missed, and thank you for your contribution to the league.

Derby Name: Dagney Taghurt
Number: RPU’s -$ TT=69
Team(s): Rolling Pin Ups & All-Star Travel Team
Position(s): blocker & optimist
What else, besides play, do you do for your league?
07 I took care of ticket sales and partnered with Ruby Rebel to plan and produced B&B2. 2008 I was elected to Director of Bout Production which included making sure all home intra-league, Ft. Wayne & B&B3 bouts came off without a hitch. I’ve also done small projects like putting together quilt squares for Dreadnaught’s project.
I’ve also recently partnered with underground comic book author Harvey Pekar to submit my derby story to Oni Press. Oni is putting together an anthology of roller derby tales. Hopefully, they will pick my entry!
How did you learn of the league?
The cover of Pressure Magazine and our former coach is a ‘back in the day’ friend of mine
How did you come about your name?
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand – read a book and listen to Glenn Beck
Why do you play Roller Derby?
Its physically and mentally challenging on a level I’ve never encountered before.
What derby skates do you use?
I’m slowly building my dream set of skates. I love my set of discontinued Reidel boots (THANKS RICH!) with a Reactor plate, Swiss bearings & Zodiac wheels. I’d like my next set of boots to be a custom molded with some custom multi color leather….a girls gotta dream.
If you had to skate for another team, who would you choose?
Detroit….Windy City…I really like living on a Great Lake. Hawaii has a league. I like Nevada’s political climate though. Arizona is looking nice.
What is the worst injury that you have received to date?
I’m currently jacked up with a knee injury. Post MRI diagnosis hasn’t happened, so I don’t know the extent of damage. I’ll keep ya posted!
What do you think of those crazy turn two boys?
I like a little more meat on the bones. They could both use some savory pot roast.
How do you balance roller derby and regular life?
Balance is difficult, but I try to be fully present at whatever I’m doing. I’m also really blessed to have an amazingly supportive partner “C’mon!” He knows I’m not going anywhere so he doesn’t freak out too much, but he does miss our time apart. So do our kids.
When you’re not skating you are…?
Being amazing and icing down my knee.
Where do you see Roller derby in the next five years?
I see growth in WFTDA leagues, but a larger growth in recreational leagues. More importantly, I’d like for derby to be acknowledged as a legitimate sport by games being televised, scores published in mainstream media outlets in “Sports” NOT METRO sections. Derby is a sport, not a scene.
Players having equipment covered in sponsorships arrangements. League owned facility to practice with greater scheduling flexibility & gym. I think it’s also really important to partner with a health care provider so players do not have to wait 3 weeks (or more!) from injury to diagnosis and creation of treatment plan. Injury care is priority.

How has the Burning River Roller Girls name come to be? The phrase “Burning River” comes from the Cuyahoga River which had caught fire numerous times such as 1868, 1883, 1887, 1912, 1922, 1936, 1941, 1948, and in 1952. The 1952 fire burned for three days and caused over 1.5 million dollars in damage.. The 1969 fire is the most famous fire on the Cuyahoga River, for it was this fire that the “Burning River” gained its notoriety. The fire of June 22, 1969 made major news attenetion when Time Magazine ran an article headlined “The Price of Optimism”,
…Some river! Chocolate-brown, oily, bubbling with subsurface gases, it oozes rather than flows. “Anyone who falls into the Cuyahoga does not drown,” Cleveland’s citizens joke grimly. “He decays.” . . .
Time Magazine, August 1969
Flames climbed as high as five stories until fire boats brought it under control approximately 25 minutes later. This fire had also became the inspiration for a few songs, one of the first being Randy Newman’s “Burn On, Big River” which can be heard here.
“I will never forget a photograph of flames, fire, shooting right out of the water in downtown Cleveland,” President Clinton’s EPA administrator Carol Browner said years later. “It was the summer of 1969 and the Cuyahoga River was burning.”
