So first of all, a huge congratulations to every member of the Burning River Roller Girls. Whether you were on Black or Blue everyone was a winner for their contribution. Last night was quite the successful fund raiser! Everyone should be proud to be a part of a wonderful event that produced a great sum of money (someone please comment with total amount), that will go to help fighting a troubling disease that change the face of this earth in the early Eighties.
Now I thought I might be able to get out of skating during the free skate, but I should have known better. Mad thanks go out to Ida Bitter, Ivanna Destroya, Pain Austen and of course Magic Lee Malicious; encouraging words, and helpful hints kept me from falling down. To be honest I enjoyed every minute of the free skate, it was exhilarating, painful (to my shins), and difficult; but I would do it again in a heartbeat. I got to do a hip whip with Magic, and took a ever so gentle hit from Destroya. What you girls do on skates is absolutely amazing!I have such a new found respect for this game and you all!
Black versus Blue; in what should have been an even match up turned into a insane amount of prowess by the Black Team. Black Team won the sk8intheface poll, so that’s who I cheered for. Unfortunately for the Blue Team, one of the strongest assets became the biggest downfalls. Hannah Bull spent more time in the penalty box then she did on the track; almost ejected from each half for accruing major penalties each time out on the track. Cheddar had to spend more time being a defensive jammer than trying to score points! The Black Team took the lead and never looked backed! It was really fun seeing the interleague teams mixed up, everyone on the Black Team got to experience a taste of the Hellbomber lifestyle!
Fresh Meat Musical Chairs!
Now that was funny as hell! As they skated around Slaughterama Mama’s man and I started putting the money down! We put all our money on lucky number Seven! As the game began we were scared that we would lose and we did! Magic and Slaughterama had their Money on LeBrawl. In the end It was Finish-Her who pulled through victorious! There was some cat fighting, major brawling, and heavy ass kicking; even one of the chairs got demolished as two girls fought tooth and nail to stay in the game.
Bigups to Miss Firecracker the one woman band; Reverend Jim for spending time shooting the shit with me; all my favorite girls (you know who you are) for showing me love when I first got their; and everyone who helped make this event happen!
Black and Blue is not your average derby match, black and blue is a way that the derby girls give back to the community. This Black and Blue is a charity benfit that will go to the AIDS Task Force of Greater Cleveland. Proceeds will go directly to helping those in need. They event starts at 6:00 pm with a free skate session with your favorite derby girls. Following this will be the unveiling of this years fresh meat; the rookies from the 2009 season will be competing in a no holds barred, full contact, musical chairs that is sure to be a complete riot! The actual bout is at 8:oo pm and is going be an exhibition bout mixed up of different players from each of the four league teams. There is Team Black, whose Captain is Gonnolea and Assistant Captain is Candy Snatcher. And then Team Blue, whose Captain is Slambassador and the Assistant Captain is Ida Bitter.
Turn 2 is pretty excited for this event being that it is close to home. Also the free skate with the players is sure to provide a whole new level of respect for these players. I personally will try to not play favorites with either team, although I am easily persuaded! So play well, and kick ass!
Had the wonderful opportunity to see some Roller Derby action down in Fort Lauderdale this weekend. It was the East vs. West from Florida. The Broward County Derby Grrls against the Fort Meyers Derby Girls. Both of the teams are in their first season; with that said, it was an interesting game to watch.
The first half was slightly un-eventful; even though the teams had played before they still needed to feel each other out. The second half got a little more cut throat; some tricky jammers, serious blockers, and offensive fouls came so natural! I hate to say that refs are biased but I seemed to be yelling a lot even when I did not care who won. I was actually told I need to quiet down or I might be asked to leave, to which I replied “do your job, and I won’t have to yell”.
In a impressive turn of events Broward County had the opportunity to score major points when down; the play was close to being called a Jammerless Jam but fortunately Broward’s Jammer only had ten seconds left on the penalty clock when Fort Meyer’s Jammer sat down. This jam ended with a 14-3 jam in favor of Broward to pull ahead by one.
On the last jam, a Broward County girl gets spun around from a hit, skates into traffic and has a double close-line with the Jammer from Fort Meyers; with fifteen seconds left, there becomes no chance for Fort Meyers to catch up. Even though the major penalty was called, the game was won. If I were Fort Meyers, I would have stayed down, forcing the jam to be called off, and allow the jam clock to be reset; but she played with heart and tried to catch up only to be defeated by the time.
The trip back was tiring as hell, no lie! We probably should have got a hotel for a few hours, but we did not. Anyway getting to see a deer get completely demolished on the way back was truely worth it! Looking back on the Grand Rapids trip all I can say is DAMN THAT WAS FUN!!
Big ups to the Paper Valley Girls for an amazing bout. Considered the underdog, these girls came from behind to clinch a much deserved victory. The Grand Raggidy Girls ranked 19th the the Nation for very good reasons. These girls play the game well, some of the best I have ever seen play!
Turn 2 boys arrive in Grand Rapids only to find turn 2 sectioned off, a quick manipulation of the border tape easily changed that one (at this point Booty fled the crime scene). Also to be noted the venue was freezing cold, crap (or some other substance) was falling from the ceiling, the hot dogs sucked (our hot dogs are amazing, just like the ball games, for a third of the price!), even there program was crappy. You would expect from the 19th league in the rankings, there would be a little more clout! Even the fan base was small, oh and dont get me started on the announcers….ugh! “Another Grand Slam”! Completely out of synch, and annoying as hell!
Anyway, let’s talk a little bit about the bout. It was troubling to hear from a few girls that they did not think they could win. We could have won that match, there were alot of moments were we looked great. One example that sticks out predominantly in my mind was Ivanna Destroya scoring 10 <edit> 12 points in a double grand slam. Eva Lucien pulled some tricky maneuvers and placed points on the board and called off the jam before Grand Raggidy could score. OUr biggest fault was allowing them to gain control of the front of the pack. These girls had a serious game plan, I would watch them play our pivots so well; their pivot boxes our pivot in the inside lane, freeing up their blocker to take front and further box out. But when our defense was in synch they were having a tough time pushing through the pack. That is what I feel our biggest downfall is; understanding how to work together. We have amazingly talented players, indivually you girls are insane at this sport, but you have to learn how to work as a team.
This is something we will have to get together before we step on to Fort Wayne’s Turf. I do not want a close game! I want a brutal ass kicking!
November 8th Get ready for some intense Derby action as the Burning River Roller Girl All Stars take on the Grand Raggedy Roller Somethings. The battle grounds for this event are to be held in grand rapids Michigan. This appears to be some tough competition for BRRG but I feel they may underestimate the BRRG All-Stars. It will be exciting to see the All-Stars back in action! The WFTDA rankings show that we are massive underdogs in this bout. I am excited to announce that Pain Austen will be playing in this bout. Pain was the coach for the All-Stars in the bout vs. the Bomb Squad, where a key timeout call was made in the last 20 seconds of the bout. This action forces the jammer clock to reset to the full two minutes, thus allowing Stroker Ace to come through and rack massive points (I beleive it was three grand slams) to tie the game. After an impressive last jam, the game went to sudden death and the BRRG All-Stars came out victorious! A win here in Grand Rapids would be huge for Burning River, so girls stay focused and be ready to kill! The turn two boys plan to be there in full effect. Posted up, and ready to heckle! It’s time to step on Michigan Turf and do some damage!
